Being born in the mid-80s and moving here to America in the early ’90s introduced me and my siblings to American television. And from that, we discovered American TV cartoons at its best. We had cartoons before school, after school, at night, and of course, Saturday morning cartoons. Life in the ’90s as a kid was an awesome time for cartoon viewing. And since there were so many to watch, I had to make a list which turned out to be a 2-part list, and even then, some folks will name some shows that are not listed. Now this list is in no particular order, and it’s just going off of what popped into my head when I started thinking about the cartoons I grew up watching.
The Simpsons
Can you really have a list of the ’90s and not include The Simpsons, the longest-running scripted show? Of course not! Many of you reading this were fans or are still fans and continue to watch it every Sunday. As many of you know, The Simpsons was is still popular today, nearing its 30th year of syndication, which they will hit later this year. I know this was one of the best TV shows growing up. It showed that not all families are perfect and that’s okay. I’m not going to say that the Simpsons were life-changing, but they did influence me a bit. Of course, the cartoon family has a way of predicting the future apparently, and you can’t get any more life-changing that predicting the future.
Batman: The Animated Series
Back then when watching Tim Burton’s Batman movies, I did not know that Batman was a comic book character. So seeing Batman as a cartoon was awesome with Batman: The Animated Series. It showed me the daily lives of both the billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne, and the Dark Knight. The art of Bruce Timm really made this awesome! And of course, from the animated series, a monumental character would then be added to the comics as canon, and that would be the Clown Prince of Crimes’ main squeeze, Dr. Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quin. It was great to see so many good villains and heroes in this show. The voice acting was superb for the show, and I still consider Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill the true voices of Batman and Joker. It will be a sad day when they no longer do the voices. It’s what got me into reading Batman comic books, and the movies that came from it were not that bad either. The Blu-ray is now available for pre-order.
X-Men The Animated Series
When my friend let me read a short run of his X-Men comics by Claremont and Lee, I was blown away and immediately became a big fan. And when he told me there was a cartoon, I was even more thrilled. When I watched the show, it was like watching the comic book characters brought to life. The characters were spot-on and their interactions with each other were just like in the books. Of course, the opening song was awesome! The show followed the life of the students of the Xavier Institute and the realities of being a mutant, both good and bad.
Rugrats
Spending summers at my cousins meant watching cartoons on Nickelodeon, and one of those shows was Rugrats. It’s a show about babies and how they see the world, and of course the interactions with their friends and families. It took a while for this to grow on me since my cousins watched it and forced me to be there. Watching Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil, Angelica, and the others go about their lives was amusing in some ways. Oh, and we can’t forget about Reptar. It was awesome to see him around.
Superman: The Animated Series
This is another gem of Bruce Timm. This came a year after Batman: The Animated Series ended. I mean, you can’t leave out the man who is faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Just like the Batman series before it, this show introduced us to the daily life of the mild-mannered reporter, Clark Kent, and the Man of Steel. Few of the key players (animators, producers, etc.) that did Batman also helped to do Superman. We pretty much got to see a quick glimpse of Clark before he went to the big city of Metropolis, but most of the series was focused on his life as Superman.
