Exclusive: Jay Baruchel discusses Almost Famous 20th anniversary

Jay Baruchel has been in a number of iconic roles over the years, including making his way behind the camera for the recent horror masterpiece Random Acts of Violence, and while discussing his work on the film ComingSoon.net took a walk down memory lane with the 38-year-old filmmaker to discuss the 20th anniversary of one of his most notable roles, Almost Famous. Check out our interview in the player below and pick up the special edition Blu-ray, “The Bootleg Cut,” here!

Written and directed by Cameron Crowe and inspired by his own experiences early in his life, the film centers on William Miller, a teenage journalist who is hired by Rolling Stone in the early ’70s to tour with the fictitious rock band Stillwater with the hopes of getting his first cover story published. Crowe based the film around his own time as a Rolling Stone writer and touring with Poco, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The cast for the film features an ensemble roster that includes Patrick Fugit (Gone Girl), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Kate Hudson (Deepwater Horizon), Jason Lee (My Name is Earl), Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Anna Paquin (True Blood), Fairuza Balk (The Craft), Noah Taylor (Preacher), Bijou Phillips (Bully), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) and Baruchel.

Though the film was a box office disappointment, grossing just over $47 million on a $60 million budget, the film was a massive critical success and garnered four Oscar nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Hudson and McDormand, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay, winning the latter, as well as getting four Golden Globe nods for Best Screenplay, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Hudson and McDormand, with the former taking home the statue and also winning Best Motion Picture.
