Skateboarding series Betty renewed for a second season at HBO

HBO has officially renewed creator Crystal Moselle’s upcoming coming-of-series Betty for a second season. This renewal comes after the female-led skateboarding series had debuted its first season finale earlier this month.

“It’s been a joy to ride through the streets of NYC with the inspiring women of BETTY, and we’re grateful to them and to Crystal for sharing their stories and friendships with us,” Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, Amy Gravitt said in a statement (via The Futon Critic). “We can’t wait to watch where our beloved Bettys go next.”

Betty is set against the backdrop of New York City. It will follow a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding. Opinionated and loyal, Janay is strong willed and stubborn in ways that both help and hurt her. Honeybear is a quiet storm. Her flagrant style is a ruse; an armor she wears to hide her emotional struggles. Kirt is a lover (to the ladies), a fighter (to the rest of the world), and a little kid in the body of a woman. She’s the funniest person alive, but even if she knew it, she wouldn’t care.

Meanwhile, Indigo (Russell) is a street-savvy hustler trapped in the body of a well-to-do art school drop-out. On the edge of the group is Camille (Vinberg), guarded, perceptive, intelligent and awkward. She wants to be down with the dudes in the skate park and has fought hard for the small space she’s carved out with them, but she needs to realize that cool points don’t actually add up to the sum of anything, especially in the eyes of the other girls.

The original film’s five leads Dede Lovelace, Ajani Russell, Moonbear, Rachel Vinberg, and Nina Moran are also starring in the series as they reprise their roles as Janay, Indigo, Honeybear, Camille and Kirt, respectively.

Betty is written and executive produced by Moselle and Arfin with Moselle also serving as the director. The original and series adaptation is based on the lead stars’ real-life all-female skate crew named Skate Kitchen.

It is executive produced by Igor Srubshchik, Jason Weinberg, Michael Sherman and Matthew Perniciaro of Bow & Arrow Entertainment along with RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira. Lizzie Nastro is also set as a producer along with Kotva Films’ Izabella Tzenkova. Arfin Material in partnership with Untitled Entertainment will be co-producing for HBO.
