BritBox Unveils What’s Coming to the Streamer in June 2020

BritBox, the subscription streaming service from BBC Studios and ITV offering the biggest collection of streaming British television in North America, has unveiled its June slate! Next month’s titles include Sticks & Stones a chilling new three-part drama from Mike Bartlett (Doctor Foster, Press) and Isolation Stories, a first of its kind four-episode limited-run drama produced during ‘social distancing’ from Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated writer and producer Jeff Pope (Philomena).

In addition, adding to the already vast and prestigious Agatha Christie collection, three new films based on the mystery writer’s tales will be added to the service: Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials Mystery, and Agatha Christie’s Secret Adversary.

The new drama from Mike Bartlett centers on the personal and professional life of Thomas Benson played by Ben Nwosu (Killing Eve, Christopher Robin), who finds himself trying to secure new business while enduring a virulent, backstabbing company culture. When he freezes during a pitch, the fall out is beyond monumental. Despite the negative pressures, Thomas goes to increasingly desperate lengths to remain successful and control his team. Unfortunately, he continues to be undermined, attacked and ultimately spirals out of control. Has he lost his confidence and is just being paranoid? Blending dark humor with intense drama, Sticks & Stones is a timely and globally relevant exploration of the potential cruelty of commercial competition and its impact on our psychology and humanity. This award-winning, genre defining mockumentary follows the day-to-day lives of office employees in the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg paper company. Co-created by Golden Globe Winner Ricky Gervais and Emmy Winner Stephen Merchant, cameras follow the employees, including office manager David Brent, as they go about their days.

Civil servant Katherine (Zawe Ashton) is forced to relocate from London to a satellite office in Northampton due to budget cuts.

Age Before Beauty 

From the writer of Poldark, this addictive drama set in a Manchester beauty salon explores the lives of a dysfunctional family through personal feuds of rivalries. The series follows Bel, a mother-of-two, as she navigates both personal and professional challenges alongside her family.

Yes, Minister

Written by Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, this political satire tells the story of James Hacker, the newly-appointed Cabinet Minister for Administrative Affairs. Despite opposition from the British Civil Service, including his Permanent Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby, Hacker sets out to formulate and implement policy based on his ideas for reform.

Yes, Prime Minister 

The original writers of Yes, Minister reunite to continue the story of James Hacker, as he is now Prime Minister and Sir Humphrey Appleby is Cabinet Secretary. In this sequel, Hacker continues to find his every move challenged by the British Civil Service, and his first term is marked with everything from defense policy to a spy scandal.

Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans (1980) | 1 x 210 (New to BritBox, BritBox Exclusive)

The gripping adaptation of Agatha Christie’s superb classic comedy thriller, in which Bobby Jones (James Warwick) and Lady Frankie Derwent (Francesca Annis) solve the mystery of a dying man’s last words, “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” Sir John Gielgud, Joan Hickson, and Eric Porter also starring in this tale of murder, suspense, intrigue and false identities.

Thomas, under increased pressure from the threat of redundancy and feeling undermined by his colleagues, is determined to prove himself. However, the consequences of one night, in which he has a drink with his boss Chris Carter, tries to impress his old school friend and potential new client Mark Baxter and have a dinner with his wife and her father, only causes his life to spiral further.

Executive produced and written by Oscar-nominee Jeff Pope, the series was filmed observing the strict rules of lockdown and each focuses on different life-in-lockdown situations. Guided remotely by a selection of acclaimed directors including Paul Whittington (Hatton Garden Heist, The Moorside), Paul Andrew Williams (A Confession, Broadchurch), Louise Hooper (Flesh & Blood, Colby Street) and David Blair (The Street, Accused), the actors and their families filmed the scenes themselves.
