Watchmen Director Stephen Williams to Helm Don’t Go In the Water for Universal

According to Variety, Universal has tapped Watchmen director Stephen Williams to helm its next creature feature titled Don’t Go In the Water, which the trade describes as “a suspenseful monster movie.”

Details are scarce, but the premise hails from a spec script by writer Peter Gaffney, and has the support of 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Levine and Lit Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner serving as producer alongside Adam Rodin.

Universal is keen to revitalize its classic monsters, particularly after the success of the recent The Invisible Man. Whether this film falls in that particular spectrum remains unclear. But it would be rad if, as noted by ComicBookMovie, this ends up as a remake of Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Gaffney previously set up spec scripts for Harvest at LeVision Entertainment and Terrestrial at Lionsgate.

Williams originally worked alongside J.J. Abrams as a co-executive producer on Lost before venturing into TV directing with stints on Showtime’s Ray Donovan and AMC’s The Walking Dead. He recently helmed two episodes of HBO’s Watchmen, notably the episode titled “The Extraordinary Being.”
