His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 6 Recap
In the previous episode of HBO’s His Dark Materials, Lyra arrived in Bolvangar and told them her name was Lizzie Brooks. In His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 6, Lyra underwent further tests as Mrs. Coulter approached for a visit.
Edge of Discovery
The doctors called Lyra in for more tests. Dr. Rendal took photographs of her, and Lyra questioned if he was looking for Dust. The question unnerved him, but she played dumb. A fire alarm interrupted them, and she went outside to join the rest of the children, where roll was being taken. Roger warned that attention accelerated the process, and Lyra started a snowball fight. During the chaos, Lyra and Roger slipped inside and found the severed daemons in cages and the intercised children together in a room. The cage for Ratter was empty, so Lyra explained about Billy’s death.
Dr. Rendal and Dr. Cooper drank together in an office. Dr. Cooper toasted their work. Rendal questioned it. Cooper reiterated that their work was important for humankind. She told Rendal that Mrs. Coulter was rumored to be on her way.
Who She Is
The girls insisted that when Mrs. Coulter arrived, a boy would be taken instead of them. Lyra revealed to Annie that Mrs. Coulter was her mother. She asked Annie to hide her for when Mrs. Coulter inspected the dormitory.
When she arrived, Mrs. Coulter asked for a demonstration. Dr. Cooper called Lyra in for her intercision. She tried running away, but Dr. Rendal caught Pan and stopped her. As she was being put in the device, Lyra screamed that Mrs. Coulter was her mother. Hearing her, Mrs. Coulter stopped the process and had her released. Together, Mrs. Coulter told her that the purpose of removing daemons was to free humans from sin. Lyra reasoned that if what they were doing was good, Mrs. Coulter shouldn’t have stopped the process.
Mrs. Coulter tried to convince Lyra to give her the alethiometer. Lyra gave her a soldered, tin box, implying it was inside. When Mrs. Coulter opened it, the spy bug she had sent flew out, and Lyra got away. She set off the fire alarm to signal to the other children to be ready to fight. The Gyptians, with Lee and Iorek, arrived to fight the Tartars guarding Bolvangar. Ma Costa snapped Rendal’s neck after he told her he was just obeying orders. Serafina showed up to save them and left in an instant. When the fighting was over, the Gyptians left with the children. John Faa wondered what would happen to those whose daemons were severed.
Balloon Driver
Lyra left with Lee, Iorek, and Roger in Lee’s balloon. She needed to rescue Asriel. Serafina appeared to Lee and told him that Lyra was important for more than just their world, and he was responsible for her. In the night, cliff-ghasts set upon the balloon. In the fight against them, Lyra fell out of the balloon.
