This Is Us Season 4 Episode 1 Recap
Last season on NBC’s This Is Us, Kevin found Jack’s younger brother Nicky, Kate had her son, and Randall and Beth decided to move to Philadelphia. In the Season 4 premiere of This Is Us, we’re introduced to three unknown characters and witnessed Jack meeting Rebecca’s parents shortly after the Los Angeles road trip.
A Young Father
Malik Hodges declined an invite to a kickback at a friend’s house. When he arrived home, we saw that he had a baby girl, Janelle, at home. His parents helped take care of her. At his father’s body shop where he worked, Malik asked a man with shady business dealings if he needed help. He wanted to make real money to pay for the best preschool for his daughter. His father, Darnell, talked to him about responsibility and warned Malik about getting mixed up with him. Darnell offered to watch Janelle so that he could go to Andre’s barbeque. There, Malik met Deja.
When Deja came home, she was all smiles. The family was about to celebrate Randall’s birthday.
A Veteran
Cassidy Sharp video-chatted with her husband before going on as mission. She was in the military and had to meet a contact who would provide a picture of a dangerous man hiding in the village. Cassidy had promised the woman an expedited visa and water for the village. Later, Cassidy found out that instead of bringing them in, he was taken out with a drone. The explosion was bigger than expected.
Back at home, Cassidy was distant. Her husband, Ryan, told her that fixing the heater would cost $1,200. She was unintentionally rough with her son, and Ryan told her to get out. Cassidy went to Veteran Affairs for help, and during a meeting, Nicky threw a chair through the window. While at Rebecca’s, Kevin received a call about it.
A Blind Musician
A blind musician made breakfast, but his puppy knocked the plate out of his hand and broke it. He went to a diner and met Lucy. They had quick romance and asked her to marry him. In the car on the way to a show, Lucy told him that she was pregnant. He was thrilled.
The musician was Jack Damon, Kate and Toby’s son, all grown up. His premature birth had caused him to lose his sight.
Meet the Parents
Shortly after their Los Angeles trip, Jack called Rebecca to go out. Unfortunately, she had plans to have dinner with her parents and their friends at the country club. Rebecca invited him to come and told him he’d need a sport coat. Jack went to buy one and met Miguel. He couldn’t afford it, so Miguel told him to tuck the tag in and return it when he was done.
Dinner didn’t go well, and Rebecca’s father didn’t think he was good enough for her. Still, Jack said he wasn’t going anywhere.
