Jessica Lange unlikely to return to AHS: ‘I don’t think I would want to start from scratch’

Ahead of the season premiere of American Horror Story: 1984, Jessica Lange spoke with TheWrap about why she doubts she will ever return to Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology franchise.

During an interview, Lange said she reprised her role of Constance Langdon in American Horror Story: Apocalypse because “it was recreating Constance, which was– for me, it was a very important time when I did that first season, Murder House.”

“But I don’t think I would want to start from scratch and create a character,” Lange continued. “And also I think a lot of the actors that I was working with, people that I really love working with, like Sarah [Paulson] or Frances [Conroy] or Kathy [Bates] — I don’t know who’s in this new season, but I don’t think it would be the same.”

Lange appeared in the first four seasons of American Horror Story on top of her cameo in Apocalypse. It was reported in July that Paulson would also not be starring in American Horror Story: 1984, which marks the first time the actress has not appeared in the franchise.

“We were like a troupe,” Lange added. “We were like the old-fashioned kind of troupe of actors, just moving from one part to the other. And that was part of what I really loved about doing it was you’d come back with a whole different story, different characters, but the same actors year after year. And that was wonderful. But I don’t think that would be the case now and I don’t think I would want to start over from scratch really. I don’t think that will happen.”

Series alums Emma Roberts, Cody Fern, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, and John Carroll Lynch are all set to return to the newest installment of American Horror Story along with new cast members Olympic gold medalist Gus Kenworthy, Zach Villa (Destroyer), and DeRon Horton (Dear White People). Glee vet Matthew Morrison and Pose star Angelica Ross, who have both worked with Murphy’s other shows, have also signed on as series regulars for 1984.

In the summer of 1984, five friends escape Los Angeles to work as counselors at Camp Redwood. As they adjust to their new jobs, they quickly learn that the only thing scarier than campfire tales is the past coming to haunt you.
