Mindhunter Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
The previous episode of Netflix’s Mindhunter ushered in a new regime at the BSU. In Mindhunter Season 2 Episode 2, Bill went to Kansas to learn about the BTK killer, who Son of Sam appeared to have inspired.
Sexual Deviances
Following his wife walking in on him using the bathroom door in a masturbatory act, the BTK killer would be sleeping on the couch. His wife brought him some books on dealing with sexual deviances.
Bill flew to Kansas and met with a local detective, Bernie Drowatzky. He asked Drowatzky to take him to the crime scenes. At the Otero house, Drowatzky detailed how the BTK killer murdered the parents and two youngest Otero children. He believed that the daughter was BTK’s main target, and he’d only planned for her and the mother to be home.
Drowatzky arranged for Bill to speak with Kevin Bright, who had survived BTK’s attack. He described how he’d played dead after being shot in the face. Kevin felt guilt for lying on the ground while BTK murdered his sister. He said he would be leaving town.
Son of Sam
After returning to Virginia, Bill presented the case to the group. He showed the similarities BTK had with Son of Sam. BTK had written about Son of Sam and fashioned a similar symbol. Holden wanted to interview him. Dr. Carr disagreed with moving him up the interview list. She confided with Bill about her concerns of Holden’s health. Bill promised to watch him for signs in case he had an attack while interviewing David Berkowitz, a.k.a. Son of Sam.
At the beginning of the interview, it appeared that Bill would be leading it. However, once Holden started talking, he was back to his old self. Berkowitz didn’t seem to like the idea of BTK copying him and being better. He admitted that he’d made up the story about demons after seeing The Exorcist.
Dr. Carr believed that, while Berkowitz insisted his murders weren’t sexual, they were. His narcissism both made him lie, to look better than he was, and tell the truth, to show off. BTK’s capacity for adapting made them think about adding a new category of serial killer.
Backyard Door
When Bill arrived home, the backyard door was left open, and Brian wasn’t in his room. He found his wife and son asleep in the master bedroom. Nancy told Bill that she’d been taking out the trash, but Brian couldn’t sleep.
A local detective, Art Spencer, knocked on the door to talk to Nancy. A body was found on a property that she was showing as a realtor. Bill told Spencer that he worked in homicide too. Det. Spencer asked Bill for a pair of Nancy’s shoes to help eliminate her from the evidence gathered at the house.
