Child’s Play: Hamill reveals he felt intimidated taking on the voice of Chucky
Mark Hamill is no stranger to voice acting, thanks to his iconic work on Batman: the Animated Series among others. But later this month audiences will hear the legendary actor lend his vocal talent to the voice of Chucky, the killer doll at the center of the upcoming Child’s Play remake.
Hamill recently opened up about the project to Den of Geek, and detailed how he became involved in the film.
“I got a letter from Lars. He already laid out his vision for the film, before I read it. And then they sent me this script and I thought the crucial element that was different from the original, which I love — I’m a huge fan of Brad’s (Dourif, the original voice of Chucky) interpretation — Chucky has a different origin. So it’s not the soul of a serial killer, but someone deliberately goes in and alters his operating system and takes off the safety measures.”
Hamill initially felt intimidated on a level he hadn’t felt since his early days as the Joker mainly due to audience expectations.
“I felt intimidation like I hadn’t felt since I did the Joker….I didn’t feel that kind of intimidation until it sunk in that I was doing this. I love Brad. It’s a great responsibility, so I’m anxious to see how people react because it’s not the Chucky that we all know from before.”
Aubrey Plaza (Ingrid Goes West) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) are headlining the new Child’s Play, under the helm of filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid). Tyler Burton Smith wrote the screenplay based on the 1988 film. In the reboot, Plaza stars as a mother who gives her son Andy, portrayed by Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out), a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. The new version of the killer doll won’t be a doll possessed by a serial killer but will be a defective Buddy doll whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.
Additional cast includes Beatrice Kitsos (The Exorcist) and Ty Consiglio (Wonder) who will be playing the roles of Falyn and Pugg respectively, two friends of Andy Barclay in the new film which is currently shooting in Vancouver. Carlease Burke (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) will also star in the film.

Chucky will stab his way back onto the big screen on June 21.
