Japanese horror comedy One Cut of the Dead heads to Shudder
The Japanese zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead is heading to Shudder. Variety reports that the AMC-owned horror streaming service has acquired the North American rights to the low-budget horror flick, with plans to launch in Australia and New Zealand later this year.
The film comes from writer/director Shin’ichirô Ueda, who made the film for a mere $27,000. So far, it’s played at over 100 film festivals around the globe, and raked in more than $30 million at the box office.

One Cut of the Dead came from the Enbu Seminar acting school with a synopsis that reads as follows: “A small low budget film crew is shooting a zombie horror flick in an abandoned water filtration plant, allegedly once used for human experiments by the Japanese military. Just as the director browbeats his actors and demands more special effects blood, a real zombie apocalypse erupts, much to his auteur delight. Packed with meta-movie references as mocking as they are loving, this relentless takedown of the Living Dead genre is a total blast.”
This fresh take on the zombie genre stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Harumi Shuhama, Kazuaki Nagaya, Hiroshi Ichihara and Mao.
