Dark Phoenix’s Alexandra Shipp rejects idea of Black Panther and Storm relationship in MCU

Alexandra Shipp X-Men Dark Phoenix Storm

On the Marvel Studios corner, we have Black Panther, the first MCU film to feature a largely black cast that made over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. On the other corner is Fox’s X-Men films, where we can see Alexandra Shipp as Storm in the upcoming X-Men film, Dark Phoenix. In the comics, the Wakandan ruler had a romantic relationship with Storm, and they even got married. There are fans who hope to see the two together, especially with Disney now having the rights to the X-Men characters in the MCU. When Black Panther and Storm’s relationship was brought up during the Dark Phoenix press interviews during WonderCon, Alexandra Shipp dismisses the idea of romance between the two superheroes.

“No! No, I don’t think Storm needs T’Challa, and I think she needs her own movie!,” Shipp said during a roundtable interview via LRM Online. “It doesn’t have to be me, it just needs to be made. A woman does not need a man in order to give her validity and she has also been around longer than him.”

The actress also shares her thoughts on Storm being in the MCU. She believes that the character will be put further into the background.

“I would and I wouldn’t (like it) because Storm barely has anything to say as it is. I don’t know about you all (other actors), but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam-packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like f***ing sasquatch.”

Synopsis: In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The film is written and directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7, 2019.

Do you agree with Shipp about not wanting to see Storm and T’Challa together? Let us know.
