Forrest Gump getting Bollywood remake as Lal Singh Chadha

The 1994 Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump is getting a Bollywood remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake, titled Lal Singh Chadha, will star Aamir Khan, who will also produce alongside Viacom India.

The Hindi-language remake will be directed by Advait Chandan, who helmed the actor’s 2017 musical drama Secret Superstar. The announcement was made on Thursday during Khan’s 54th birthday event in Mumbai. “We have bought the rights from Paramount,” Khan told reporters. “I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a feel-good film. It is a film for the whole family.” The film is scheduled to begin filming in October.

The original film starred Tom Hanks as the eponymous Gump. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis, and was a critical and commercial success before going on to win six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It was based on Winston Groom’s 1986 novel of the same name.

Bollywood remakes of Hollywood films are all the rage lately, including such films as 2017’s Saif Ali Khan’s Chef, based on the Jon Favreau film, and 2014’s Bang! Bang! which starred Hrithik Roshan and Kaif, which was an adaptation of the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz vehicle Knight and Day.
