Fox 2000 developing K-Pop centric film
According to Variety, Fox 2000 has acquired the rights to an untitled feature film “set in the world of K-Pop.” Elyse Hollander is set to write the K-Pop film’s screenplay which has Scooter Braun SB Projects and Epic Magazine attached to produce.
“We’ve found great partners in Epic and Fox 2000 to showcase the world of k-pop, We are excited to tap into Elyse’s talent to pull back the curtain on the genre at a time when it’s on the rise globally and give fans a story fueled by the excitement of k-pop music.” Braun said in his interview with the outlet.
The untitled film will follow the story of an Asian-American college student from the U.S who becomes a top competitor on South Korea’s toughest K-Pop Competition show. The idea for this film might be inspired from Korean shows like Superstar K, K-Pop Star and Produce 101 which are competition series that are open for anyone around the world to audition.
Epic Magazine’s Joshua Davis added that Braun is the right person to make this film happen because of his experience working with K-Pop through his work with Psy (Gangnam Style) and CL (2NE1). “Scooter Braun is the perfect person to help audiences experience the thrill and wildness of k-pop, He’s a visionary in the music space, and Epic couldn’t have found a better partner in our quest to tell this incredible story.”
The K-Pop film will be produce by James Shin and Braun for SB Projects; and Joshua Davis and Arthur Spector for Epic Magazine. The executive producers will be SB Project’s Scott Manson, Epic’s Joshua Bearman and Bellevue Productions’ John Zaozirny. Erin Siminoff and Jiao Chen will be the ones to oversee the project for the studio.
Hollander is known for her Blonde Ambition script which is a biographical film about Madonna. The biopic is currently being developed by Universal Pictures. Braun is best known as a talent manager for music stars like Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Ariana Grande.
Due to the huge global following that K-Pop has been gaining over the years, it has successfully made its way to the U.S mainstream. K-Pop groups such as BigBang, Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, EXO, BTS and Black Pink are one of the many K-Pop acts that help made South Korean music attained worldwide recognition through their unique music, styles and synchronize dances.
