Cosmos: Possible Worlds will go deeper into the future

Cosmos will be getting a new season called Cosmos: Possible Worlds in 2019, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will be returning as the show’s host. With Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, viewers embark on a journey in the past, present, and future.  The upcoming season will continue where the last season left off, and it will be broadcasted on Fox and National Geographic.

“We’re coming onto what we could call the third season of Cosmos,” deGrasse Tyson tells Nerd Reactor. “Because the first was with Carl Sagan back in 1980, the second was 2014, and now another one in the spring of 2019.”

“Knowing what the laws of nature tell us, how does that allow us to know what has come before us and what is yet to come?” he questions. “What kinds of worlds might we craft, given our knowledge of these laws, provided we are wise enough to become good shepherds of our own fate?”

“Ann Druyan, who’s the co-writer of all three Cosmos from back in 1980, is the one common denominator that has been in each,” deGrasse Tyson said. “Other staff has changed; the host has changed – I’m a different host from Carl Sagan. She is the creative engine behind how and why we take the science and make it relevant to who and what you are as a citizen of the planet and participant in civilization.”

There was a 34-year gap between the first and second season of Cosmos. With Cosmos: Possible Worlds, it will be 5 years since the last season.

“Well, it takes me a long time to really do the research and really to think of what the next story for the next season would be,” Druyan explains to Nerd Reactor. “And then, Brannon Braga and I sat in a room for two years writing this show. We’re lucky enough to have André Bormanis and Sam Sagan in that room with us and contributing. We wanted to tell a coherent story. We want the whole 13 hours to feel like one epic journey.”

Druyan continued, “Viewers can expect a voyage through space and time, back to the lost worlds of this planet and to the possible worlds to the future. We go deeper into it. We spend almost an entire episode in the future. Actually, there are two or three episodes in which we venture into the very distant future. I think we’re on to something.”
