Nerd Reactor was invited to SPACES at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Orange County to check out its new VR attraction, Terminator Salvation: Fight for the Future. It’s a free-roaming VR experience complete with 4D effects and lots of evil Terminators trying to take over Los Angeles.
At first, I was a bit hesitant since SPACES was using the Terminator Salvation name. (Have you seen the movie?) However, don’t let that deter you from checking it out since it involves VR and Terminators.
The first thing we did was the face scan in order to have your likeness be placed in your body in the VR experience. We were then equipped with sensors for our feet and hands and were given a physical gun prop to shoot objects in the VR world. The Oculus headset and visuals were powered by the HP OMEN X VR Backpack workstation PC, and once we were set up, we were transported into the future.
In our session, our team was comprised of four members as we tried to take down Skynet. But first, we need to be transformed into a robot to stand a chance against the enemies. With the VR, we really felt like we were in another setting as we looked at our bodies becoming machines. The immersion is added thanks to the 4D effects like haptic feedback, motion platforms, and environmental effects.
There is an actual mission that you can do to help take down Skynet. However, if you want a high score, you can ignore all of that and focus on shooting objects like Terminators, targets, barrels, and signs. If you really want a higher score, look for hidden toilets spread throughout. I was able to get the top score for the day and reach the top 6th place overall. (I’m pretty sure I’ll be knocked out once more people start to do this.)
If you’re a fan of the Terminator franchise and immersive experiences, then I highly recommend Terminator: Fight for the Future. My only gripe about this is that it’s a very short experience. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.spaces.com/
