Black Panther tops A Wrinkle in Time for fourth straight win

This weekend, Marvel Studios‘ Black Panther added an impressive $41.1 million domestically and $100 million internationally, for a global weekend of $141.1 million. The movie was No. 1 around the world for a fourth straight weekend! Black Panther has now reached $562 million in North America, making it the No. 7 release of all time, passing The Dark Knight ($535 million) and giving Marvel Studios the top two superhero films ever (No. 1 is Marvel’s The Avengers with $623 million).

Internationally, Black Panther opened Friday in China and earned an estimated $66.5 million there for the three days. With the $100 million total overseas box office for the weekend, the movie is now up to $516.6 million internationally and has reached $1.079 billion worldwide. Internationally, the film has now passed Captain America: Winter Soldier ($454M), The Dark Knight ($470M), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($474M), The Amazing Spider-Man ($496M), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($506M) and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($514M). The international highlights include: China ($66.5M); UK ($55.8M); Korea ($42.4M); Brazil ($29.6M); Australia ($25.7M); France ($25.2M); Mexico ($24.6M); Germany ($17.6M); Russia ($17.0M); Taiwan ($12.3M); Indonesia ($12.1M); Malaysia ($9.7M); India ($9.6M); Philippines ($9.2M); and Japan ($8.9M).

The Ryan Coogler-directed film stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

Disney also took second place domestically with newcomer A Wrinkle in Time, which grossed $33.3 million from 3,980 theaters, an average of $8,371 per theater. Internationally, the big screen adaptation took in $6.3 million, for a global total of $39.6 million. Directed by Ava DuVernay, A Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Peña, and André Holland. The film received a B CinemaScore from audiences.

Ahead of the March 16 domestic release, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM debuted Tomb Raider in nine Asian markets this weekend where it pulled in a strong $14.1 million from about 3,425 screens. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the video game adaptation stars Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, Sir Derek Jacobi, and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Back at the North American box office, Aviron’s The Strangers: Prey at Night came in at No. 3 with $10.5 million from 2,464 theaters, an average of $4,253 per site. Receiving a C CinemaScore and directed by Johannes Roberts, the film stars Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, and Lewis Pullman.

Dropping two spots to fourth place was 20th Century Fox’s Red Sparrow, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling and Jeremy Irons. Made for $69 million, the espionage thriller earned $8.2 million and has grossed $31.1 million after two weeks.

Warner Bros.’ Game Night rounded out the top five domestically with $7.9 million and has collected $45 million after three weeks. Internationally, the action comedy generated $5.4 million from 50 markets to bring its overseas total to $24.7 million and worldwide sum to $69.7 million. Costing $37 million to make, Game Night was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The film stars Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, Jesse Plemons, Danny Huston, Chelsea Peretti, Michael C. Hall, and Kyle Chandler.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Peter Rabbit took in $6.8 million this weekend in sixth place and has earned $93.5 million domestically after five weeks. Made for $50 million, the Will Gluck-directed film stars James Corden, Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, Sam Neill, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki, and Margot Robbie.

MGM’s Death Wish dropped to seventh place its second weekend with $6.6 million and has made $23.9 million so far. The $30 million-budgeted film was directed by Eli Roth and stars Bruce Willis, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone, Dean Norris, and Kimberly Elise.

Also opening were The Hurricane Heist (Entertainment Studios), which grossed $3.2 million from 2,402 and received a B- CinemaScore, Gringo (STXfilms), which debuted with $2.6 million from 2,404 theaters and got a C+ CinemaScore, and Thoroughbreds (Focus Features), which brought in $1.2 million from 549 theaters.
