Ian McDiarmid not ruling out a Star Wars return as Emperor Palpatine

Anyone who follows Star Wars knows Emperor Palpatine needs some creative writing to make a comeback in the modern trilogy. But Ian McDiarmid does not believe all hope is lost for his character. For instance, maybe Palpatine can return as a ghost or become revived somehow. Additionally, he can make his presence known in one of the spinoff movies.

The last option is the most likely one. Writing Emperor Palpatine in for the next main episode would prove a challenge, but a spinoff appearance feels less impossible. McDiarmid recently spoke to BBC News, and Sunday Express picked it up.

“As far as the new films are concerned, I’m dead. There is no question about that,” the 73-year-old veteran actor explained. “But there is what they call the anthology series and actually the most recent one, Rogue One, was about the time when I was in charge.”

“Maybe they are keeping me as a surprise for later but I have no idea. Of course, I don’t want anyone else to play him.”

While some actors wish to move on from a mega-franchise such as Star Wars, McDiarmid is not opposed to another movie. It is just difficult because, as he said, his character is dead. Good won over evil.

Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars might remember though that Palpatine’s former apprentice Darth Maul came back to life. Considering Darth Maul’s revival, Palpatine showing up in the main series again is not completely out of the question.

But again, it would cheapen his death. If Emperor Palpatine ever returns, expect it to happen in one of the spinoff movies.
