69th Annual Emmy Awards: And the winner is…

Last night hallmarked the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Even though the sun hadn’t set yet, the stars were out and aplenty. Stephen Colbert held the hosting honors for this year and he definitely didn’t disappoint. Colbert took the opportunity to dish out many jabs, both big and small, at President Trump and even went as far as to use former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer in the opening monologue.

That wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg, as I’d say one of the biggest things buzzing this year was the question of who will be taking home awards since Game of Thrones was not there. It’s actually the first time since 2011 that the blockbuster show wasn’t in the running. That’s due to the release date of the season, in which only 4 episodes of Season 6 fell within the 2017 Emmy qualification period (June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017), and thus was counted for the 2016 Emmy period.

There’s so many great shows across so many platforms that have a chance to claim top honors, it’s almost a toss-up at who could win. With the juggernaut out of the way, it allowed The Handmaid’s Tale to snag 6 Emmy’s including Best Drama as well as Big Little Lies taking home 5 awards. Other big winners include Atlanta, Veep and Saturday Night Live. A big disappointment for me was Westworld, beacuse despite having 22 nominations, they still went home empty-handed.
