Gorgeous new images from Marvel’s Black Panther

Entertainment Weekly‘s Comic-Con issue has been revealed and it’s all about Black Panther and the people of Wakanda.

EW revealed the photos today as they prepare for the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con weekend and their annual Comic-Con double issue.

In the EW article, which hits the newsstands this Friday, director Ryan Coolger revealed what makes T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) different from the other superheroes.

“First and foremost is he doesn’t see himself as a superhero,” Coolger tells EW. “He sees himself as a politician. That’s the first thing on his mind when he wakes up in the morning. ‘How am I going to fulfill my duties as king of this place?'”

After the death of his father, T’Challa isn’t looking for vengeance or power. He just wants to lead and protect his people as their new king. Of course, he will face opposition from other factions in his tribe, including Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Killmonger will team up with mercenary Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), a man who just wants the Vibranium underneath Wakanda, to overthrow T’Challa.

The film has been described as a cross between The Godfather and James Bond. Executive producer Nate Moore tells EW, that the story will be “a big, operatic family drama centered on a world of international espionage. So hopefully we’re getting the best of both worlds.”

The images provide a deeper look into the world of Wakanda and the inhabitants, including Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Danai Gurira as Okoye, and Letitia Wright as Shuri.

Forest Whitaker plays Wakanda’s shaman and longtime advisor to T’Challa’s father, Zuri. He is also the keeper of the Heart-shaped Herb, a Vibranium-enriched plant that only grows in Wakanda, which provides the person who ingests it superhuman strength.

As for Lupita Nyong’o , who plays Wakanda’s undercover operative Nakia and former lover of T’Challa, she tells the magazine, “She is a departure from what she was in the comic book. Nakia is a war dog. She is basically an undercover spy for Wakanda. Her job is to go out into the world and report back on what’s going on.”

Letitia Wright plays T’Challa’s genius little sister, Shuri, who runs the Wakanadan design team. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described Shuri a bit more, “She’s responsible for all these amazing technological advances that Vibranium has brought about from Wakanda.”

The Walking Dead‘s Danai Gurira plays Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje, the all-female special soldiers who protect the king and kingdom. After losing T’Challa’s father in the Captain America: Civil War, Okoye feels guilt over being unable to protect him.

Gurira tells EW, “She can be serious, but she also has an unexpected sense of humor. She has a heart, but for her country and for her people. She’s not a person who doesn’t connect to human beings as a result of what she does.”

Fans are excited over the release of the photos, leading to #BlackPanther trending to number one on Twitter. More news on the film is expected to be revealed at this year’s D23 Expo and San Diego Comic-Con.

Black Panther will return to San Diego Comic-Con next week during the Marvel Studios Hall H panel on Saturday. No information on the guests have been revealed as of yet.

Black Panther will open in theaters on February 16, 2018.
