Rogue One: A Star Wars Story first draft had classic opening crawl

Many Star Wars fans were hoping for the classic opening crawl scene for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The movie started and they were met with something else entirely. Director Gareth Edwards revealed during an Empire Magazine podcast interview that the first draft of the film actually had the crawl sequence.

“At some point, probably six months before we were filming, we were in a meeting, and they talked about not having an opening crawl, because these are standalone films, not part of the sagas,” Edwards said. Yes, Edwards actually wanted the crawl. “If I’m honest, there was an initial kind of like, ‘Whaaaaat? I want the crawl!'”

The crawls are used to let the audience know what’s happening in the story. However, with the audience already getting a prologue with the Erso family and Orson Krennic, there wasn’t a need for it.

“The opening sequence is kind of the crawl of our movie. It’s the setup. And our film is also born out of a crawl – the reason we exist is because of a previous crawl, so it feels like this infinite loop that will never end. It’s a small thing to give up to get to do Star Wars,” he said.
