Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (PS4 Review)

It’s time to show off those cross character combo attacks once again, but this time in a glorious new shade of HD paint. Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 includes everything from the original including all the characters, stages, costumes, and game modes. Build your Marvel/Capcom dream team and get ready to pull off those Viewtiful and Uncanny combos against all your friends and foes.

By far UMvC3’s strongest selling point today is the sheer amount of content. You are still creating your team of 3 from a large roster of 50 (Capcom has 25 and Marvel has 25 characters). These even include Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath, which were originally only available as DLC characters. Along with all the characters, each of them have all 10 costumes unlocked from the start. Heroes and Heralds mode still stand out for fans looking for a challenge outside of the Arcade mode while playing offline. While it is also available online, it definitely suffers from the longest queue times when trying to find an opponent.

The online servers have also seen an improvement from the previous console iterations. Online still features the standard ranked matches, player matches, and lobbies for setting up a room with people on your friends list. While the PS3/Xbox 360 servers were never bad, there is definitely an improvement on the PS4’s end. I noticed fewer matches with poor connection or disconnects.

Final Reaction

Overall UMvC3 is released at a perfect time to tide fans over. This works well for Capcom with it being between seasons with Street Fighter V and currently working on Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. UMvC3 still lands at the same judgment point for me as it did when it originally launched in November 2011. It is a great deal of fun when playing with friends of similar skill levels.

Unfortunately, the battle system still allows for infinite combos, which can be frustrating to endure if you make a mistake against an opponent who knows what they are doing. The online community is also as strong as ever thanks to the anticipation for the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and all the free publicity that came with announcing UMvC3’s release during PSX and the Street Fighter V Capcom Cup.

While the updated release is currently only available on PS4, an Xbox One version is currently scheduled for release in March 2017.
