The spectrum of critics for this year’s 10 Cloverfield Lane is pretty wide, ranging from people who loved it, to people who absolutely hated it. The film, however, won great respect by many in the industry as to the unique marketing style this franchise has implemented, utilizing everything from puzzles to hidden images in websites to promote the film. One of the other pieces that made this film such a huge success was having first time director, Dan Trachtenberg, at the helm. With several short films under his belt, Trachtenberg attracted the attention of the powers at Bad Robot, and giving to the world a smart and cerebral Sci-fi follow-up to 2008’s Cloverfield. Now, we’re hearing news that Trachtenberg is in talks to helm a film that seems to “vanish” every time anyone gets attached to it. And no, we’re not talking about DC’s The Flash.
According to Deadline, Trachtenberg is currently in negotiations to direct the Lionsgate’s upcoming biopic about the master escape artist, Harry Houdini. Although at one point Johnny Depp was reported to star in the film, with Dean Parisot in the director’s chair, it seems none of those decisions panned out. But Deadline has confirmed that Trachtenberg is negotiating to take on a project based on the William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. The script, penned by Noah Oppenheim, won the scripting prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall. Also attached to the project already are producers Frank Marshall and American Beauty’s Bruce Cohen.
