Lionsgate lands U.S. rights to Benedict Cumberbatch’s spy thriller Ironbark

Variety reports that Lionsgate has officially landed the North American rights to director Dominic Cooke’s upcoming spy thriller film titled Ironbark, with Roadside Attractions reportedly set to handle the film’s theatrical release. Starring Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch and Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan, the film had its world premiere last Friday at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Based on the true story of Greville Wynne, Ironbark follows a British businessman, who is unwittingly recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. Forming an unlikely partnership with a Soviet officer hoping to prevent a nuclear confrontation, the two men work together to provide the crucial intelligence used to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch (MCU, The Imitation Game) as Greville Wynne, Rachel Brosnahan (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Emily Donovan, Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl) as Sheila Wynne, Merab Ninidze (Nowhere in Africa) as Oleg, Angus Wright as Dickie Franks, and Kirill Pirogov.

Ironbark is directed by Dominic Cooke from a screenplay written by Tom O’Connor. It is executive produced by Cooke, O’Connor, Cumberbatch, Leah Clarke, Ashley Fox, Glen Basner, Alison Cohen, Milan Popelka, and Josh Varney. Adam Ackland, Ben Browning, Ben Pugh, Rory Aitken and Donald Sabourin are also set as producers. It is a production by FilmNation Entertainment.
