At the heart of the process of bringing these breathtaking intergalactic species to life was Academy Award-winning make-up artist Joel Harlow. Together with his team of amazingly talented creatives, Harlow set to work on creating aliens from over 50 different races for the film and documented the entire creative process for each one in exhaustive detail, from preliminary sketches to final make-up application. In his Star Trek Las Vegas debut, Joel will discuss his work on this blockbuster film and showcase art from his upcoming book, Star Trek Beyond – The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow. Science Trek

A Science Trek - Strange New Worlds
Friday at 1:30pm in the DeForest Kelley Theatre

Wolf 359 is well known in Star Trek as the locale for a disastrous confrontation with the Borg, but now astronomers are beginning to search this red dwarf star for signs of planets using the Kepler Space Telescope. Caltech astronomers Jessie Christiansen, Philip Hopkins and Robert Hurt discuss the scientific reality behind an increasingly bizarre collection of exoplanets that rival the strangest places Kirk, Picard or Janeway have ever visited. "Planet hunter" Christensen, a researcher with the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, describes—among others—the doomed WASP-12b, an egg-shaped planet orbiting so close to its parent star that its atmosphere is being consumed; or HD 189733 b, a bright blue planet where winds blow up to 5,400 mph, and it rains glass—sideways. Hopkins, a theoretical astrophysicist sheds light on how planets, stars, and galaxies form while Hurt, visualization scientist, describes how he turns astronomical data into illustrations that help us visualize and understand far-off space. Moderated by Phil Plait.

A Science Trek - The Search for Class M Planets
Saturday at 10:45am in the DeForest Kelley Theatre

Imagine visiting a small red star surrounded by seven Earth-sized planets, each of which could potentially have liquid water. Amazingly, this is not a story concept for Star Trek: Discovery, but a real science discovery made earlier this year by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. While three of these worlds lie in the star’s so-called “habitable zone,” determining which exoplanets could (or do) support life is far more complex than making a simple sensor scan. Caltech scientists Jessie Christensen, Philip Hopkins, and Robert Hurt discuss what we even mean by “habitable," and what makes a universe, a galaxy or a planet hospitable or hostile to life. Moderated by Phil Plait.

A Science Trek - When the Moon Eats the Sun: The Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017

Sunday at 12:00pm in the DeForest Kelley Theatre

On August 21, 2017, the United States will get a tremendous astronomical treat: A total solar eclipse, the first in the continental U.S. in nearly 40 years. This awe-inspiring event will be seen by tens of millions of people... but how does it work? Renowned astronomer Phil Plait will give you the ins and outs of the science of the eclipse, as well as explain how to observe it for yourself. There won't be another one in the US until 2024, so now's your chance to find out why so many people say this is the most wondrous celestial event they've ever witnessed.

Star Trek Las Vegas will run August 2-6 at the Rio Suites Hotel in Las Vegas. Visit www.creationent.com for the full schedule and tickets.
