Edge of Tomorrow sequel is moving forward with new writer

edge of tomorrow live die repeat tom cruse

Tom Cruise lived, died, and repeated things over and over again in Edge of Tomorrow, the futuristic sci-fi film where aliens with the ability to manipulate time are invading and conquering our world. The film did leave on a happier note, but with it becoming a success at the box office and with critics and audiences, Warner Bros is ready for round two. Now we have news that Matthew Robinson, co-writer for Monster Trucks, is penning the script. If the script is good enough, Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and director Doug Liman will likely return.

Although Edge of Tomorrow was successful at the box office, it wasn’t a huge megahit since it made $370.5 million from a budget of $178 million, plus marketing. However, that’s still enough along with the film gaining more fans from home video releases to warrant a sequel. And now Warner Bros. is moving forward with the sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Matthew Robinson is attached as the writer, and his writing projects include The Invention of Lying and Monster Trucks. The site reports that Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and director Doug Liman are expected to return if they all approve of the script. Christopher McQuarrie co-wrote the script for the first film, but he’s busy with taking over the Mission: Impossible franchise due to his successes with the last two Mission: Impossible films. Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth also helped with the script.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on the All You Need Is Kill light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and follows Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a PR for the military, who is sucked into war against an alien threat known as the Mimics. After an encounter with a special Mimic, Cage gains the ability to repeat the initial battle over and over again. Thanks to this ability, he’s able to become a skilled warrior, and he’ll be the key to helping end the war.

It’s magic every time McQuarrie and Cruise are working together. But McQuarrie is directing the next two Mission: Impossible films back to back, so he definitely doesn’t have the time. Here’s hoping that Robinson can match or take the sequel even further.
