Mary Poppins is back, and this time Emily Blunt will be portraying the flying British nanny in the upcoming live-action musical, Mary Poppins Returns. Today, Disney has released a new trailer along with an artistic poster. There are surprises in the trailer that will surely make fans excited. Check it out below!
When we last saw Mary Poppins, she was teaching the Banks family about the importance of family and having a good time. Now the children, Jane and Michael Banks, have all grown up. Michael has grown up a bit too much to the point where he doesn’t appreciate magic and wonder anymore. Gasp! This reminds us of other films like Hook and Christopher Robins where the main character grew from a boy to an adult, and they must tackle their mightiest foe, responsibility. In Mary Poppins Returns, Michael’s family is dealing with the loss of a loved one, and it’s up to Mary Poppins to help bring light into dark times.
In the original film, Dick Van Dyke played Poppins’ friend, Bert. In the new film, Lin-Manuel Miranda will be playing Mary’s friend, Jack, a street lamplighter. One of the surprises in the trailer includes Mary Poppins transporting the family into an animated world. It’s definitely paying respects to the original animated sequence featuring dancing penguins. And in this film, let’s hope Lin-Manuel Miranda knocks it out of the park with his own dancing sequence.
The biggest shocker for us is seeing Dick Van Dyke returning as an old man. In the original film, he played Mr. Dawes and Bert. However, in the new film, he’s playing Mr. Dawes’ son, Mr. Dawes Jr, a retired chairman of the bank where Colin Firth’s character is now running the show.
The film is directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) from a screenplay by David Magee and screen story by Magee, Rob Marshall and John DeLuca, which is based on P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins stories. Marc Shaiman is scoring the film with original songs by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman.
The cast includes Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Julie Waters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen, Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins, Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy, and Angela Lansbury as Balloon Lady. The Banks children are played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and Joel Dawson.
Mary Poppins Returns flies into theaters on December 19, 2018.
