Star Wars has just been on quite a roll lately, with the success of both The Force Awakens and Rogue One, as well as the highly anticipated and newly dubbed Episode 8 title – The Last Jedi. It only seems right that they keep the ball rolling. In an effort to uphold their promise to fans of a new Star Wars film every year, we’ll be looking forward to the Han Solo spinoff releasing in late 2018.
Yes, that does seem so far away, but Lucasfilm and Disney have already been hard at work putting together an all-star cast for the film. So far confirmed have been Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as a currently undisclosed character, and most recently Woody Harrelson. Harrelson’s role was undisclosed as well until now. There was speculation for a bit that he would be playing the role of Garris Shrike. For many, that name does not ring a bell in the slightest, but I’ll get into his backstory in a bit.
In an interview with Variety, Harrelson was asked about the rumors regarding his character role and whether it was true. Here’s how it went down:
In so very few words, he pretty much confirmed that the rumor is true. Obviously in the video, you hear them refer to Shrike as Solo’s mentor. Here’s that backstory I mentioned. Shrike was a bounty hunter-turned-smuggler that raised an orphaned Han Solo. While he did bring him in and taught him the tricks of the trade, he was also very abusive to Solo due to his extremely short fuse of a temper.
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Harrelson will approach the character, not to mention finally coming to the Star Wars universe. There’s a lot of time before the movie releases, but until then, stay tuned for more updates on this and more!
