Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle Review (PS4)

Rita is up to no good by bringing havoc across the Earth, and for some reason the city of Angel Grove. Zordon summons 5 teenagers with attitude to become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle, you relive the series that started it all with the original 5 Power Rangers. Play as Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Jason as you encounter Rita’s evil goons that’ll stop at nothing until the Earth is under her control. But Rita and her monsters aren’t the only things you’ll have to worry about.

Mega Battle takes the classic 2D side-scrolling action to bring back the Power Rangers. You pick your favorite Ranger and duke it out at what Rita can throw you. Whether it’s Putties or oversized monsters, you’ll punch, kick, zap, and slash your way through. It’s very reminiscing of older 2D fighting games like Ninja Turtles and Double Dragon. Like most 2D fighting games, controls are very simple. Attack, Strong Attack, and Jump. That’s pretty much it, but Mega Battle makes uses of combos that you can do that’ll do some good damage or throw your enemies in the air. Along with the 3 simple controls, there’s Block, Shoot (when Morphed), and Roll, which adds a nice element of dodging and makes it easy to get out of a jam.

Although the game is fun alone, it’s really meant to be played with several friends. Up to 4 people can join in on the mayhem, and like any multiplayer game, it just adds to the fun. Each of the Rangers can be powered up individually with new moves and unlockable combos, and you can even unlock group attacks that can be done with 2, 3 or even all 4 players. The downside is that the multiplayer is on the console only. For some reason you can’t play online with your friends, which is a shame given this generation of video games is dominated by online features. To remedy this, Mega Battle has plenty of Extras to continue the fun with all your friends. You can battle each other in a Versus mode, or battle wave after wave of Putties and other Mega Battle enemies. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s bound to continue the laughs.

Any Power Rangers fan will appreciate the Story Mode. It’s a retelling of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series that has you facing Rita and her monsters. You’ll battle as a teenager, as a Ranger, and even in the MegaZord. And easily one of the best moments in Power Ranger history, the 5 Episode Evil Green Ranger Arc is unfortunately shrunk down to one battle. But afterwards you can unlock everyone’s favorite Ranger. The game is rather short. Only 6 chapters broken into 3 segments each chapter, but as with most games, the more people the more enjoyable.

Final Reaction

The Power Rangers franchise has a long rich history. Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle is just a small taste of that franchise. It has its moments and fun factor, but is easily bogged with repetitive gameplay. Multiplayer is the way it’s meant to be played, so the decision to not make it online multiplayer is an odd one. But nothing like having a few friends over with some snacks, drinks, and Power Rangers butt-kicking action to brighten up your night. With the DLC that adds the secondary cast as well as the White Ranger, Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle can really take advantage of the 19 series that have been made to further its replay value with new Rangers and continue the story from where it leaves off.

Rating: 3.5/5 Atoms

Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle is available now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
