I don’t think I’ve stated this enough in just about all my articles: I LOVE the ’80s! Everything about the ’80s has been my jam, from TV to film, comics to cartoons. EVERYTHING! So, to hear that there was going to be a remake of a film that inspired everybody’s favorite comic book franchise to create a series run, as well as a cartoon series, I knew I had to find out who was going to direct it. And now, we know who, and I couldn’t be more stoked!
According to Deadline, we have found that the director to grab the mutated-hero franchise by the “sausage” is none other than one half of the directing duo from Sausage Party, Conrad Vernon. “Conrad Vernon is a subversive comedic genius. He is the perfect director to bring this iconoclastic franchise back to life,” Richard Saperstein stated, who will be on board to produce the remake. Alongside him will be Akiva Goldsman and Charlie Corwin, with writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole to rewrite the screenplay by Steve Pink and D.C. Mitchell. “The opportunity to re-imagine a favorite cult-classic from my high school years is an honor. Toxie is an underground icon. My favorite kind!” said Vernon.
Toxic Avengers was the film franchise that took the term “hero,” and thought, “Eh, what the hell.” Created from combining a tormented janitor at a health club and some vats of toxic sludge, resulting in a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength. The film was such a B-movie success that it warranted not only a cartoon series, called Toxic Crusaders, but also inspired Marvel to carry out a comic series in the early ’90s.
