A tale of sharks, bombs, and Nicolas Cage in ‘USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage’ trailer

If you’re a fan of movies, you’ll remember the telling tale from Quint, the boat captain from the 1975 summer blockbuster, Jaws, of the USS Indianapolis, and their battle of looking down the throats of hundreds of sharks while being stranded. The story was told with grit and heart, chalking itself up to one of cinema’s most incredible monologues ever delivered. The tale, itself, held grounds in truth, as the ordeal remembered was based on actual events, and even more miraculous was that there were survivors who lived to tell their stories. These were remarkable accounts of bravery and fortitude…and then came along Nicolas Cage.

Now, I know the man gets a lot of grief more often than most, but it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it. Cage has made mockeries out of his portrayals of characters, and has done so, once again. Released today was the trailer to the upcoming film about the incredible struggle for survival, told through the eyes of Nicolas Cage. The film, USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, recounts the harrowing true story of the crew of the USS Indianapolis, who were stranded in the Philippine Sea for five days after delivering the atomic weapons that would eventually end WWII. As they awaited rescue, they endured extreme thirst, hunger, and relentless shark attacks.

Now, to be fair, it’s not the material that I have an issue with. I think the story is that of a courageous tale that was due its time on the silver screen. I loved hearing Quint tell the story in Jaws, and watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel retell this story every year always has me choked up. It’s the Cage I have issues with. The man is on hanging barely by his last pinky toe before he loses all credibility as a serious actor, and I think his performance in this film might just be the final straw to break the Hollywood Camel’s back. I don’t even think Mario Van Peebles, the director of the film, can save him. Sorry, Nick, but it looks like you might be heading to the SyFy channel. Check out the trailer below:
