According to The Hollywood Reporter, 5-time Emmy-winning creator Seth MacFarlane is in the process of developing a new limited series adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winner Herman Wouk’s World War II epic novel titled The Winds of War. The series will be part of his $200 million overall deal with NBCUniversal Content Studios which he had signed earlier this year.

“I can’t think of a more exciting project with which to launch my creative partnership with UCP than Herman Wouk’s The Winds of War,” MacFarlane said. “I’ve been a devoted fan of Wouk’s WWII epic for decades, and its depiction of small-scale human endurance in the face of large-scale global upheaval has never been more relevant than it is today. In my very first meeting with [UCP president] Dawn Olmstead, we connected over this project — I learned that she herself comes from a Naval family — and to bring it to fruition under her stewardship and that of her UCP team will be a perfect fit for all. We can’t wait to get started.”

Published in 1971, The Winds of War was Wouk’s second World War II novel which tells the epic story of one American family’s turbulent voyage across the continents and across the years that spanned throughout the global war. Seven years later, the novel was then followed by a sequel titled War and Remembrance. MacFarlane’s upcoming adaptation is actually the second time it will be adapted into a miniseries with Dan Curtis directing and producing an ABC miniseries in 1983 where it garnered 11 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Limited Series.

The new miniseries will be co-written by MacFarlane and Seth Fisher. The Family Guy creator will also executive produce along with Erica Higgins through their Fuzzy Door banner. It will be a production by Universal Content Productions, who are also planning to shop the series to networks and streaming services.
