Star Wars gets a new LEGO holiday special on Disney+

Nearly 42 years since the first-ever Star Wars Holiday Special had debuted in 1978, and now Lucasfilm has announced that a brand new holiday special is set to make its way to Disney+ on Tuesday, November 17 which is the same day that the first special aired on CBS. However, this time, the beloved Star Wars characters will be featured in their LEGO versions as they take on A Christmas Carol-like style with Rey and BB-8 going down memory lane to revisit some of the franchise’s key moments. The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is expected to be set after the events of last year’s The Rise of Skywalker with Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Rose Tico and Chewbacca gathering to celebrate Life Day, which is a Star Wars holiday that was first introduced in the 1978 TV special. Rey and droid pal BB-8 head off on a quest to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force, but their visit to a mysterious Jedi Temple sends them careening through time and space. Rey interacts with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and other characters in some of the franchise’s most beloved moments, as they try to return in time for a Life Day feast with her friends on Chewbacca’s Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk

“We wanted to give a wink and a nod to the original,” Executive producer Josh Rimes said in a statement (via USA Today). “It’s a celebration of the saga…A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages.”

Rimes also revealed that the new 45-minute holiday special was inspired by “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Christmas Vacation” and old Burl Ives musical cheer. He also excitedly teased that LEGO versions of the franchise’s villains including Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren will have a chance to interact with one another.
