Comedy Central has announced that they’ve officially given a series order to the upcoming adult-animated reboot of Nickelodeon’s classic 90s’ animated sitcom The Ren & Stimpy Show. This announcement comes 25 years after the iconic series aired its final episode in 1995.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group. Chris McCarthy said in a statement. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

The reimagined The Ren & Stimpy Show is part of the network’s continued effort of creating new content for adult-focused animation. Comedy Central had also gave series orders to Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head revival and a Daria spinoff series titled Jodie which will feature the voice of Tracee Ellis Ross.

Nickelodeon launched the original Ren & Stimpy alongside Rugrats and Doug in 1991. It ran on-air for five seasons from 1991-1995 with two episodes titled “Sammy and Me” and “The Last Temptation” that separately aired on MTV in 1996. The series centered on the adventures of the titular characters, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua and a kind but dimwitted cat. The show was first rebooted for Spike TV in 2003 in far more graphic form by the show’s (now disgraced) creator John Kricfalusi as Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon (also known as Ren and Stimpy: The Lost Episodes), which only ran for 6 episodes.

During its run, it quickly catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist with its dark humor, vivid imagination and critical acclaim. Often thought of as an adult series at the time, the iconic dog and cat duo are consistently ranked among the top animated characters of all time.
