The superhero movie landscape has undergone big changes in recent years. Studios are bringing in new talent to tell stories featuring characters from a wide array of different backgrounds. Their ultimate goal is increased representation on the big screen. And to a lot of people, including future Spawn star Jamie Foxx, the success of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther in 2018 paved the way for these changes to take effect (via SuperHeroHype).

Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa wasn’t the first Black superhero to headline his own movie. But Michael Jai White’s starring turn as Spawn movie in 1997 didn’t fare as well. Foxx has been attached since 2018 to play a new version of Spawn, written and directed by creator Todd McFarlane. And in a new interview with Yahoo, Foxx expressed his belief that Black Panther’s arrival makes this the perfect time for Spawn to return to theaters.

“I surprised Todd McFarlane,” said Foxx. “I said, ‘Bro, I know that one day you will do this movie, and I hope you will keep me in mind.’ What Black Panther did was let us know that it’s so necessary, and it’s the time. And Spawn is just an interesting character in itself. The heads that are being put together to bring you something special – look out.”

Regardless, the Spawn reboot continues to hit one speedbump after another on its road to production. McFarlane has generally accepted responsibility for the movie’s delay. But earlier this week, he told Joe Quesada that some unnamed “big talent” has just come aboard the project.

Foxx can next be seen in another “superhero” movie, Project Power, which debuts on Netflix tomorrow.
