Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist renewed for a second season at NBC
Following its successful debut, NBC has officially renewed their Jane Levy-led musical comedy-drama series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for a second season. The renewal comes over a month since the series had concluded its 12-episode first season.
“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who fell in love with ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ and how much joy it brought to everyone. We’re thrilled to bring it back and can’t wait to see how Zoey’s journey continues,” Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta said in a statement (via The Futon Critic).
The Paul Feig-produced series is not only a hit to the critics but it has also become one of NBC’s strongest digital performers, generating more than half its 35-day viewership in the 18-49 demo from digital sources.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist centers on Zoey Clarke, a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, who always preferred podcasts over pop songs, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts and desires of the people around her – her family, co-workers and complete strangers – through popular songs. At first, she questions her own sanity, but after getting some guidance from her musically adept neighbor, Mo, and making a breakthrough with her ailing father, Zoey soon realizes this unwanted curse may just be an incredibly wonderful gift as she connects with the world like never before.
The series stars Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as the titular character, Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) as Max, Alex Newell (Glee) as Mo, Peter Gallagher (The O.C.) as Mitch and John Clarence Stewart (Luke Cage) as Simon along with Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard) as Maggie.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is created by Austin Winsberg (Jake in Progress). It is executive produced by Paul Feig, Kim Tannenbaum and Eric Tannenbaum, David Blackman, Daniel Inkeles, Sam Laybourne, Jason Wang, Samantha McIntyre and Davah Avena with Dan Magnante, Michele Greco and Mandy Moore set as producers.
Levy is best known for her role as Tessa Altman in ABC’s sitcom Suburgatory. She also starred in Hulu’s horror anthology adaptation of Stephen King’s Castle Rock starring alongside Sissy Spacek, Bill Skarsgård, and André Holland.
