Josh Trank Says Other Filmmakers Pushed Him to Make Capone Weirder

By now, many of you have seen Josh Trank’s Capone, starring Tom Hardy in the titular role of the famed mobster; and so you know the film was … well … kinda weird. Well, as it turns out, Trank was prompted by other filmmakers to push hard for that weird tone.

“Yeah, everybody was like, ‘There are areas where you could be weirder. If you’ve already gone this far to make a movie this weird and this unexpected, own it. Own your shit.’ No pun intended,” Trank told THR.

In the same interview, the director says he’s happy with the divisive reviews Capone received from critics.

“I’m actually very happy with the outcome. At this moment, it looks like it’s split down the middle, and the things that people seem to love about the movie are the same exact things that other people hate about the movie,” Trank said. “That’s perfectly fine because everything in this movie is up front and center for you to see. Nothing is being hidden. It’s right there. But I’m glad that what people are reacting to are the most extreme elements of the movie. It’s getting a reaction. If you hate this movie, that’s perfectly fine because you’re reacting to something that’s pretty real.”

A ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al Capone (Tom Hardy) was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Capone’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.

Co-starring in Capone are Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me) as Capone’s long-suffering wife Mae, Matt Dillon (Crash) as his closest friend Johnny, Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) as his doctor Karlock, and Kathrine Narducci (The Sopranos) as Rosie, one of his sisters. It will also feature Jack Lowden and Noel Fisher.

Capone is written and directed by Josh Trank (Fantastic Four, Chronicle) and produced by Aaron L. Gilbert (Fences, Beatriz at Dinner) for BRON, Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder (Hold the Dark, Tau) for Addictive Pictures, and Academy Award nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglorious Basterds, Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction) for A Band Apart, alongside executive producer Jason Cloth of Creative Wealth Media.

A number of actors have portrayed Al Capone over the years, including, Paul Muni (The Shame of a Nation), Rod Steiger (Al Capone), Neville Brand (The Scarface Mob), Jason Robards (The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre), Ben Gazzara (Capone), Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire), Anthony LaPaglia (Road to Perdition), and, perhaps most famously, Robert DeNiro in Brian DePalma’s The Untouchables.
