Jodie: Tracee Ellis Ross-led Daria spinoff gets series order at Comedy Central

Comedy Central has given a series order to Grace Edwards’ new adult animated spinoff titled Jodie, based on the character from MTV’s classic 90s sitcom Daria with Golden Globe winner Tracee Ellis Ross set to voice the titular lead. This marks the black-ish star’s first ever animated project, who has also signed on as an executive producer.

Jodie Landon, previously voiced by Jessica Cydnee Jackson, is known as one of Daria’s friends in Lawndale High who made her debut appearance during the first season. The spinoff picks up with her character graduating from college and entering a complicated world.

What the original series did for showing how inane high school was for Gen X, Jodie will do for exploring the trials and tribulations of a first job for a new generation. The show will satirize workplace culture, Gen Z struggles, the artifice of social media and more. With themes of empowerment along gender and racial lines, explorations of privilege, and a wicked sense of humor, the series will shine a light on the personal and professional issues young Black women face today.

Jodie is written and created by Grace Edwards, who is known for her work in HBO’s Insecure.

Created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn, Daria was also an animated spinoff of Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head. It ran on-air for five seasons from 1997-2002 on MTV. Through its ensemble cast, the iconic series addressed key issues on the show – race, gender, class and identity – all through the lens of the wry wisdom of its main character, who was credited by cultural critics as a favorite fictional feminist that shaped a generation of women.
