The Freak Brothers: Woody Harrelson, Tiffany Haddish & more join new adult animated series

According to Deadline, Emmy winner Woody Harrelson (Cheers, Zombieland, Free Bird), and Tiffany Haddish (Girls’ Trip, Tuca & Bertie) have officially signed on along with Golden Globe winner John Goodman (Monsters Inc., The Emperor’s New Groove) and Pete Davidson (The Angry Birds Movie 2) for the leading roles in the upcoming adult animated series titled The Freak Brothers. The eight-episode series is expected to premiere this fall and is currently being shopped to distributors.

In addition to the casting news, the first mini episode of the series has also been released which you can now check out below, featuring the titular gang as they try to steal the original recipe of the KFC chicken from Donald Trump.

Based on Gilbert Shelton’s underground comic series titled The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers which ran from 1971-1997, the series is set in 1969 where life in San Francisco consists of free love, communal living and political protest. Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek (Harrelson), Fat Freddy Freekowtski (Goodman), Phineas T. Phreakers (Davidson) and their mischievous, foul-mouthed cat, Kitty (Haddish) spend their days dodging many things — the draft, the narcs and steady employment – all while searching for an altered state of bliss.

But after partakking of a genetically mutated strain of marijuana, the Freaks wake up 50 years later to discover a much different society. Quickly feeling like fish out of water in a high-tech world of fourth-wave feminism, extreme gentrification and intense political correctness, the Freaks learn how to navigate life in 2020 — where, surprisingly, their precious cannabis is now legal.

The Freak Brothers is written and produced by Dave Krinsk and John Althschuler along with Daniel Lehrer and Jeremy Lehrer of Highly Gifted. King of the Hill alums Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland have been tapped as showrunners. It is executive produced by Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon through their WTG Enterprises banner. Adam Devine and Blake Anderson, who were cast as the series’ first voice actors, are also set as executive producers along with Gilbert Shelton, Manfred Mrockowski and Jeffrey S. Edell.

The series is a co-production by Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty) and Pure Imagination Studios (The Simpsons), who are in-charged of the animation.
