While production may be at a stand still on his highly-anticipated feature debut The Batman, Mattson Tomlin is continuing to build his impressive résumé with the upcoming sci-fi project 2084, which was just picked up by Paramount Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The plot details for the project are pretty scarce, but it’s being described as a “spiritual sister” to George Orwell’s iconic novel 1984, which depicted a totalitarian world filled with propaganda and surveillance run by a leader known only as Big Brother, with a forbidden love story at the center of it all. Sources also report the tone of the project features similar tones to Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix.

Following a heated bidding war, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises for Paramount Pictures, acquired the rights to produce the spec script for the studio. Bonaventura’s other entries into the sci-fi genre include the 2005 adaptation of the sci-fi horror game Doom, the 2018 hit monster movie The Meg and pushing the original Matrix film into production when he was still the head of film at Warner Bros.

Tomlin made headlines when Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) brought him in to co-write the script for the highly-anticipated The Batman reboot starring Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), and has since become attached to other projects including the romantic sci-fi film Little Fish starring Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), the pilot for Amazon’s series adaptation of Fear Agent, a film adaptation of BOOM! Studios’ Memetic for Lionsgate and an adaptation of Mega Man for 20th Century Studios.
