Netflix Puts Documentaries on YouTube For Free to Help Teachers Around the World

Netflix puts documentaries on YouTube for free to help teachers around the world

As a way to aid teachers from all around the world during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix has announced that they have officially released ten of their best documentaries on their YouTube channel, providing teachers free access to additional learning resources that will further help them in their on online classes with students. In addition, each title also has an educational resources link that will available to both students and teachers to.

“For many years, Netflix has allowed teachers to screen documentaries in their classrooms. However, this isn’t possible with schools closed. So at their request, we have made a selection of our documentary features and series available on the Netflix US YouTube channel.” the streaming service said in their official blog. “We hope this will, in a small way, help teachers around the world.”

The documentaries are a mix of series, short films and features including: Ava DuVernay’s 13th film which examines the U.S. prison system; the 2018’s Knock Down the House which centers on the midterm primary elections involving four women candidates led by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; and the 8-episode nature series Our Planet.

Currently, the documentaries have only English subtitles but Netflix has promised that subtitles in more than a dozen languages will be provided later this week. The streaming giant is also planning to conduct online Q&As with some of the creators behind these projects so that students can hear from them firsthand.

The full list of documentary films and series are below:

13th – Combining archival footage with testimony from activists and scholars, director Ava DuVernay’s examination of the U.S. prison system looks at how the country’s history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America. This piercing, Oscar-nominated film won Best Documentary at the Emmys, the BAFTAs and the NAACP Image Awards.

Knock Down the House – Go behind the scenes as four determined women — including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Viela, Cori Bush, and Paula Jean — challenge big-money politicians in the 2018 race for Congress.

Chasing Choral – Divers, scientists and photographers around the world mount an epic underwater campaign to document the disappearance of coral reefs.

Abstract Series (Season 1) – Abstract: The Art of Design takes you beyond blueprints into the art, science, and philosophy of design. The series goes inside the minds of the world’s greatest designers, showcasing the most inspiring visionaries from a variety of disciplines whose work shapes our culture and future.

Babies Series (Select Episodes) – Filmed over the course of three years, Babies is a landmark series that explores the miracle of the first full year of life through the pioneering work of leading scientists from across the globe. The series examines the epic journey every person  embarks on, from helpless new-born to independent toddler.

Explained Series (Select Episodes) – Each episode will explore current events and social trends pulled from the zeitgeist, touching topics across politics, science, history and pop culture — featuring interviews with some of the most authoritative experts in their respective fields.

Our Planet Series – Narrated by Sir David Attenborough This eight-part series will explore the unique and precious wonders of our natural world from the creators of the award-winning series Planet Earth. Experience our planet’s natural beauty and examine how climate change impacts all living creatures in this ambitious documentary of spectacular scope.

Period. End of the Sentence (Short Film) – In a rural village outside Delhi, India, women lead a quiet revolution. They fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation. Period. End of Sentence. — a documentary short directed by Rayka Zehtabchi — tells their story.

The White Helmets (Short Film) – Set in Aleppo, Syria and Turkey in early 2016,  as the violence intensifies, The White Helmets follows three volunteer rescue workers as they put everything on the line to save civilians affected by the war, all the while wracked with worry about the safety of their own loved ones.

Zion (Short Film) – Directed by Floyd Russ, this short is a gripping portrait of Zion Clark, a young wrestler born without legs who grew up in foster care. Clark began wrestling in second grade against his able-bodied peers.
