Godzilla: King of the Monsters wasn’t the gargantuan hit Warner Bros. and Legendary were expecting, which forced the studio to rethink their “Monster-verse” and notably delay Godzilla Vs. Kong. Yet, the mediocre box office haul and disappointing reaction from critics hasn’t stopped director Michael Dougherty from pushing for additional Godzilla films.

During a recent Godzilla: King of the Monsters quarantine re-watch, Dougherty took to Twitter to discuss his ideas for a Godzilla flick set in ancient times, and it actually sounds quite cool.

“I love the idea that Godzilla and the other Titans go back thousands if not millions of years and were the original rulers of the planet,” Dougherty tweeted, “and I wanted the logos and Titans depicted as ancient hieroglyphs to hint at that theme.

“As for how Ghidorah ended up trapped in the ice, I like to think he lost his last battle with Godzilla and got KO’d into freezing waters.

“I’d still love to do GODZILLA B.C. where we finally see this ancient world of man and monster, like a modern day Ray Harryhausen flick. Or maybe we just go for it and finally take humans out of the equation…”

Indeed, the human element continues to be a problem with these sort of movies. Studios have a confounding inability to create realistic characters to provide the necessary weight need to ground the wacky monster action. Of course, one could look back on practically every Godzilla film and cite the same issues. In a lot of ways, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which I actually quite enjoy, was the perfect modern Godzilla film — for better or worse.

Even so, it’s unlikely we’ll ever get to see a prehistoric Titan battle Royale. And that’s too bad.

In 2014, Gareth Edwards brought a Jaws-esque Godzilla movie to the screen. The film follows nuclear plant supervisor Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) as he obsessively searches for the truth behind the accident that claimed the lives of many, including his wife, on the day when the the building inexplicably went up in flames. Joined by his son, Brody discovers the existence of giant monsters, the reawakening of which pose a threat to all of humanity.

Now, director Mike Dougherty, along with stars Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Bradley Whitford, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, Kyle Chandler, Thomas Middleditch and Ziyi Zhang have added their own entry to the Godzilla franchise.
