New Mutants Scrapped a Post-Credits Scene With Antonio Banderas

The New Mutants' Scrap Post-Credits Scene Would Have Featured Antonio Banderas

The New Mutants’ scrap post-credits scene would have featured Antonio Banderas

Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox now called 20th Century Studios, a lot of projects under Fox have been delayed and cancelled including Josh Boone’s planned trilogy for The New Mutants, which certainly had gone through a lot of hurdles before its final April 3, 2020 release. Speaking with EW, Boone has finally opened up about the scrapped plans he previously had for The New Mutants’ sequel.

The director revealed that before the Disney-Fox merger had happened, they were supposed to film the post-credits scene which would have featured Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas as the father of Henry Zaga’s Roberto/Sunspot named Emmanuel da Costa as a way to set him up as the next villain of the sequel titled New Mutants: Brazil.

“It was intentional that we didn’t shoot it,” Boone said. “We had always planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next movie. We even had an actor cast, but because of the merger and because Marvel owns X-Men now and is going to do their own thing, there was no reason to go shoot it.”

In addition, Boone had also shared that Marvel characters Karma and Warlock would have also been included in the sequels with Karma also set as a villain in the second one and would later become a member of the team by the third film. In the comics, Karma was known as the first leader and original member of the New Mutants.

“Karma was always going to be the villain in the second movie that would be absorbed into the group by the end,” He explains. “We had always wanted to bring Karma and Warlock into the second one when we couldn’t do it in the first one. For us, we wanted that initial core team [for the first movie]. We just couldn’t swap out Illyana. We felt like there was no reason to do [the movie] if we couldn’t bring that character to life in the first one. Swapping out for someone like Magma” — a different comic book figure with the ability to transform her body into a “magma” state — “I don’t feel fits very well in the kind of movie we were gonna make. I’ve got Bobby already. We tried to make a team that made sense.”

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic, and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.
