Dave Bautista’s My Spy release pushed back to April

Guardian of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista’s My Spy experiences yet another delay with STXfilms officially changing the release date of the upcoming action comedy. The film was originally scheduled to premiere last year in August but was suddenly pushed back to March 13, 2020. Now, My Spy will finally make its debut in theaters on April 17, over month later than the previous release date. The new date will see the Dave Bautista-led film go up against Guillermo del Toro’s horror film Antlers and Carey Mulligan’s drama thriller Promising Young Woman.

This wasn’t the only movie that had been rescheduled this month as the highly-anticipated Bond film No Time to Die was also pushed back last week due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak (formerly named as Coronavirus) while Trolls World Tour was moved up to take No Time to Die’s original slot.

My Spy follows a hardened CIA operative (Bautista) who finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl (Coleman), having been sent undercover to surveil her family. Bautista and Jonathan Meisner serve as producers on the film, and STXfilms’ SVP of production Drew Simon and director of development Kate Vorhoff will oversee production.

The film stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) as JJ Cena, Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies) as Sophie Newtown, Kristen Schaal (BoJack Horseman) as Bobbi Ault, Ken Jeong (The Hangover film trilogy) as Kim Trang, and Parisa Fitz-Henley (Jessica Jones) as Kate Newtwon.

Jon and Erich Hoeber penned the script for the film, which is directed by Peter Segal (Get Smart, Fifty First Dates). The Hoeber brothers’ screenwriting credits include the Red action-franchise and Battleship, as well as the science fiction adventure, The Meg, starring Jason Statham and Ruby Rose.

My Spy is one of several projects STX is developing with Bautista, including the short-form action-comedy VR series from the company’s immersive content division, STXsurreal. The ambitious undertaking by STX to follow a custom-created model for their upcoming projects will help serve to create definitive roles for actors while also encouraging collaboration.
