Adam McKay’s The Uninhabitable Earth gets series order at HBO Max
HBO Max has announced that they have officially given a series order to wiip’s forthcoming anthology series adaptation of The Uninhabitable Earth, based on author David Wallace-Wells’ best-selling novel and New York Magazine climate change article of the same name. On top of executive producing, Emmy nominee Adam McKay (Succession) has also signed on to write and direct the first episode.
“Adam is one of the rare artists who can deliver a pointed, impactful message in a piece of great entertainment,” Chief content officer for HBO Max and president TBS, TNT, and truTV, Kevin Reilly said in a statement (via The Futon Critic). “I can’t wait to see what he does with this material, as there is no timelier and more relevant message than a wake-up call on climate change and the growing impact on our lives.”

First published in 2019, The Uninhabitable Earth offers readers a travelogue of the near future and the impending terrors – rising sea levels, food shortages, refugee emergencies, climate wars and economic devastation – we will all face. Wallace-Wells work forecasts all of the ways the world will be forever transformed if we don’t take swift, sweeping measures.

The adaptation is set as an anthology series which will be comprised of stand-alone fictional stories covering a wide range of genres and possible futures that could result from the rapid warming of our planet. In addition to McKay, WarnerMedia plans to enlist top directors and writers to join the first season in order to create a provocative and entertaining series that taps into our unease with just how delicately our planet is teetering on the precipice.

The Uninhabitable Earth will be executive produced by Succession producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick through their Hyperobject Industries banner. Paul Lee (Dickinson) and Mark Roybal (No Country for Old Men) of wiip are also set as executive producers along with Animal Kingdom’s David Kaplan (It Follows) and Andrea Roa (It Comes at Night). Wallace-Wells has signed on as the series’ consulting producer.
