Frozen II Dominates Thanksgiving Box Office, Knives Out Opens Strong

Walt Disney Pictures’ animated sequel Frozen II continued to dominate throughout Thanksgiving weekend, holding the number one spot in its second week for an estimated $85.2 million at the domestic box office. That represents an impressively low 34.6% drop from last weekend, with a domestic total of $287.5 million and a global total of $738.5 million. Expect the film to cross the billion dollar mark within the next week or so!

Opening in second place was Lionsgate’s Knives Out, which had a robust estimated $27 million dollar opening, quite strong for an original project. Earning raves from audiences and critics alike, this is another win for writer/director Rian Johnson after the success of Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and may pave the way for more films featuring Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc. Opening on Wednesday, the film has grossed a total of $41.7 million domestically so far for a $70million worldwide total.

Dropping from second to third was 20th Century Fox’s Ford v Ferrari at $13.2 million, with only a modest 16% drop. The Matt Damon/Christian Bale starrer has taken in $81 million domestically and $143 million worldwide.

Also holding quite strong at #4 was the Tom Hanks starrer A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which only fell 11% for an $11.8 million weekend take. The Sony Pictures film from director Marielle Heller has taken in $34.3 million so far, but with this kind of hold the biopic could wind up being a solid awards season performer.

Performing in the same ballpark as Beautiful Day but in half as many theaters was Universal’s romantic drama Queen & Slim, which opened at #5 with $11.7 million for a $15.8 million total.
