This Is Us Season 4 Episode 9 Recap
In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, Randall and Rebecca got into an argument when he brought up that there maybe something wrong with her and her memory. In This Is Us Season 4 Episode 9, the Pearson family, including Nicky and Deja’s birth mother Shauna, came together at Randall’s for Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Traditions
Before being drafted, Nicky and Jack spent Thanksgiving together away from their rough home life. Nicky bet against their dad’s team and won, even with a tie. Jack and Nicky got five pounds of shrimp at a nice restaurant and drank and listened to music in Jack’s truck. It was the best Thanksgiving he’d ever had, and Jack promised they’d do it again. Unfortunately, that never happened.
In the present, Randall called the new owners of his previous house, looking for their Thanksgiving decorations. Thankfully, they found them in the attic, so Randall, Annie, and Nicky went to New Jersey to pick them up. The owner found CDs that Rebecca had given Randall, so he told Nicky to pick one. He chose “So Long, Marianne” by Leonard Cohen. Randall explained Jack’s views on the song, which echoed what Nicky told Jack decades earlier. Nicky stopped to get five pounds of shrimp to share for Thanksgiving. In a flash forward, grown-up Jack Damon put out five pounds of shrimp as the tradition had lived on.
Coming Out
Tess told Kevin about a meme going around school involving posting celebrity crushes on Instagram. It stressed her out because her crush was Zendaya. She could either post it and come out to the whole school or be left out. Kevin took her to get a burger. He suggested coming out to the drive-thru speaker first. Tess did, which gave her the courage to post the meme. She got tons of supportive comments. When Randall asked Kevin what he wanted to do next, Kevin liked supporting other people. He wanted to start a family. Flash forward nine months later, Kevin had a pregnant fiancée.
Evil Feelings
Kate and Beth recognized in each other that they were having bad thoughts and wanted to talk through them. Beth admitted to Kate that she resented that Shauna was doing well. She had a good job, friends, and a nice apartment. Kate admitted that she hated that Toby had lost weight without her. She feared they were growing apart. On the plane, she confessed to Toby about Jack’s real first solid food.
Deja got upset when she learned that Shauna had friends. She wondered why Shauna couldn’t get it together with Deja in her life. Beth comforted her. For Kate, when she picked up Toby’s phone to take a picture, she saw a text from his crossfit friends about her that was negative.
Take a Walk
Rebecca was still not over her argument with Randall. She left to take a walk and go to a movie. In a twist, we learned that we were seeing a different time – nine months later – that Rebecca went for a walk. She was confused and lost throughout her trip. When Rebecca left her phone, she got upset. Police took her home to Kevin’s cabin. The whole family was there for the Big Three’s 40th birthday, except for Randall. They weren’t speaking to him.
However, in the present, Rebecca appeared fine. She admitted to Randall, though, that she’d forgotten what movie she was seeing during the trailers. Rebecca wanted to see a doctor.
