This Is Us Season 4 Episode 5 Recap
In the previous episode of NBC’s This Is Us, Kevin bought an RV to live next to Nicky, and in the 90s, Rebecca and Kate learned that Kevin and Sophie got married. In This Is Us Season 4 Episode 5, Randall learned that he passed on a troubling condition to Tess, and Rebecca and Kate finally moved into a new house.
Seltzer Bubbles
Randall finally got to meet with a fellow councilman when he got a call from Tess’s school. She had suffered a panic attack. When Randall brought Tess home, he tried to comfort her by telling her that he experienced them too. Tess didn’t want to talk about it and didn’t want to be like him. Then, Randall told Beth that his anxiety was the thing that he hated most about himself and that he hated knowing that he gave it to Tess.
Beth remembered speaking to William about Randall’s panic attack in season 1. William told Beth that he also experienced panic attacks and regretted giving them to Randall. He told Beth that his mother poured seltzer water and would tell him to watch the bubbles to help him calm down. Beth shared this with Tess and Randall. Tess explained that she had hidden her sexuality when it came up with a new friend, which had triggered her attack. Beth found therapists for Tess and Randall, but Randall didn’t think he needed one.
Hockey and Ice Cream
Kevin took Nicky to a hockey game where Cassidy was being honored for her service. He asked Nicky about Jack when he was growing up, and Nicky told him that Jack liked ice cream. Kevin shared how Jack would slice ice cream out of a carton like a cake. At the hockey rink, Nicky left early to get away from the beer around him. Cassidy’s husband, Ryan, appeared distracted and left shortly after Cassidy’s recognition. When Kevin dropped Cassidy and Matty off, he confronted Ryan about leaving. Ryan told him that he resented that Cassidy was being honored for something that broke her.
Back at Nicky’s trailer, Kevin found him sober. Nicky told him that Jack sliced ice cream like a cake because their father, Kevin’s grandfather, would do it too.
A New Home
Rebecca and Kate moved into a new house, and Rebecca wanted to host a family dinner. Randall brought Beth, newlyweds Kevin and Sophie came from New York, and Miguel brought wine. Marc, Kate’s boyfriend, invited himself over. Kevin didn’t like Marc, and the kids fought in the kitchen. Rebecca scolded them, since all she wanted was a nice dinner. She had made Cornish hens, but they didn’t turn out right
They ended up ordering pizza, and Rebecca told the story of Jack when they first moved into their family home. The lasagna she made had burned, and a bird had flown into the window. Jack, who was terrified of birds, tried to catch it and knocked over the lasagna. Rebecca told the family that all she wanted was for them to be happy. For Sophie and Kevin’s wedding present, she sang a song from The Princess Bride that she played on the piano.
The Family Piano
Kate was waiting for a gift for Jack from Kevin and Randall. It turned out to be the family piano. In the bench, she found Polaroids that they had taken the night of the family dinner. Kate’s reaction to the picture of her with Marc showed that things had gotten dark with him.
