Netflix developing Bone animated series based on Jeff Smith’s comics
Netflix has acquired the rights to Jeff Smith’s Bone comic book series and is developing an animated series based on the award-winning comics, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The TV series will follow the iconic Bone cousins on an adventure through a vast, uncharted desert and into a mysterious valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creators.

“I’ve waited a long time for this. Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter by chapter and book by book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world,” said Smith, who will oversee the animated series.
Bone was originally published in 1991 and ran until 2004, with Smith publishing 55 issues. The series remains one of the most celebrated comics and has received 10 Eisner Awards in addition to 11 Harvey Awards. Smith’s Bone series, which he began working on when he was 10, is considered a pioneer in comics publishing for kids. It even served as the launch title for Scholastic’s Graphix Books in 2005.

Bone is the latest animated series joining Netflix’s slate of upcoming kid and family content. Other projects in the genre include Green Eggs and Ham, Boss Baby, and the live-action Baby-Sitters Club. Netflix has also secured the rights to Roald Dahl’s library.
