Benedict Wong has been a very busy actor and has appeared in the biggest film of the year, Avengers: Endgame. Of course, fans can expect to see him return as Wong in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As of now, moviegoers can see him in Ang Lee’s Gemini Man, a film where old Will Smith fights young Will Smith. The movie has embraced new technology with 120 fps (HFR), and Nerd Reactor had the chance to chat with Wong about the film and his excitement for the Doctor Strange sequel.
“Having watched it at the premiere, you’re constantly shaking your head and marveling at how this is actually possible and at the Weta team that created this digital version of Will,” Wong tells Nerd Reactor about Gemini Man.
“The 120 frames per second feels incredibly immersive,” Wong said. “It’s like Inception, I guess. There’s a big gaming industry as well. There are a lot of gamers, and they sort of play on that kind of framerate anyway. Watching it with Dolby surround sound is an experience like no other.”
Wong talks a bit about his performance with Will Smith and young Will Smith.
“We filmed in a barn in Glennville, and we would shoot this scene as normal with Will and his double as Junior,” Wong explained. “And maybe a couple of months down the line, we would be in Budapest in a studio with floor markings to scale of the barn that we shot. Will would switch roles and play the younger version, and then we would match our movements.”
Benedict Wong acted in many films, but Netflix’s Marco Polo helped push the actor to more eyes. He talks about the show’s cancelation and about the actors moving on to do bigger projects.
“You can never guarantee how long it will last or why it gets canceled unjustly,” Wong said. “It’s just out of your hands. We’ve had a great journey, especially in Marco Polo. Many of the actors have gone on to do amazing projects like Crazy Rich Asians, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Fantastic Beasts. I really miss that show. I guess you can smile that you have a two-year window.”
Many Marvel fans know of Benedict Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his first appearance was in Doctor Strange. Before that film, director Scott Derrickson was known for helming horror films. During San Diego Comic-Con, the director said that he is “going to make the first scary MCU movie” with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Wong shares his thoughts about the upcoming film.
“I’m very excited to return to Doctor Strange,” Wong said. “I don’t think I’ve seen a horror movie in a long time. After being in one, it’ll be fascinating.”
Gemini Man is currently in theaters, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
